LG TVs Now Make You Responsible for Wiretapping Laws

LG's updated terms of service for smart TVs now place the responsibility on users to ensure compliance with wiretapping and privacy laws when voice recognition features capture conversations, including those of guests. This clause suggests users must actively inform household members and visitors that their voices may be recorded and processed by the TV.

This development follows reports that LG gaming monitors are allegedly installing adware and McAfee Scam Detector software onto PCs without explicit user consent. The LG Monitor App Installer requires broad system access, leading to user apprehension.

Users have several options to mitigate these privacy risks. They can disable all microphone-based features on their TVs. Alternatively, avoiding software updates would prevent new terms but would also forgo crucial security patches. Disconnecting the TV from the internet would disable voice controls and data transmission but significantly reduce its smart functionality.

While LG's intentions may be to cover corporate liability for accidental voice capture, the broad wording has fueled concerns about potential misuse of voice data for AI inputs. This situation, especially concerning AI's evolving relationship with consent and copyright, has generated significant backlash online.
