Ring-Enhanced Smoke Detector Offers Wireless Convenience

Kidde has officially launched its first battery-operated smart smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, a product resulting from its ongoing collaboration with Ring. Previously, smart smoke alarms from Kidde required hardwiring, limiting installation options for consumers who preferred battery-powered devices.

The new Kidde Ring Smart Smoke + CO Alarm operates on two AA batteries, included in the package. This design offers significant installation flexibility, allowing users to place the detector in various locations within their homes. Kidde provides guidance on optimal placement, advising against installation near heating appliances or sources of direct weather exposure.

Setting up the device is straightforward; it connects directly to a home's Wi-Fi network and integrates with the Ring application. Notably, no additional Ring hub or other Ring technology is required for its operation with the app. This simplifies the setup process for users who may already be part of the Ring ecosystem.

This launch reflects a broader trend where major tech companies like Amazon and Google partner with established brands to offer specialized smart home devices. Google, for instance, now collaborates with First Alert after discontinuing its own Nest Protect. Amazon, through its Ring brand, continues to expand its smart home offerings by leveraging partnerships with companies like Kidde.
