A three-year-old startup, K2, has successfully raised $250 million to accelerate the production of its high-power satellites at its Southern California facility. This latest funding round, led by Redpoint Ventures, brings K2's total investment to over $400 million since its inception in 2022. The company is strategically positioned to leverage the increasing availability of heavy-lift launch vehicles for its ambitious satellite projects.
K2 is developing two satellite classes, Mega and Giga, to address emerging markets such as in-space computing. Its first Mega Class satellite, Gravitas, is scheduled for a March 2026 launch on a Falcon 9 rocket. Gravitas will test a powerful 20-kilowatt Hall-effect thruster and large solar arrays, representing a significant leap in satellite capability beyond current standards.
The Giga Class satellites are designed for super-heavy rockets like Starship, capable of generating up to 100 kilowatts of power. K2 employs a vertical integration strategy, designing its own key components to reduce costs and scale production efficiently. This approach aims to drive down prices for massive satellite platforms, meeting the anticipated demand for advanced orbital services.
