1 Mar
Summary
- New ISAC technology transforms smartphones into radar-like sensors.
- ISAC uses echo-based pulses, similar to bat echolocation, to map surroundings.
- Trials successfully detected objects and people without disrupting mobile service.

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) is an emerging technology poised to transform smartphones into sophisticated radar-like sensors. This innovation, currently being tested by Vodafone and Tiami Networks, allows mobile devices to detect unconnected objects and visualize their surroundings using echo-based pulses, akin to bat echolocation.
Recent trials conducted at Vodafone's Málaga R&D facility in Spain successfully demonstrated ISAC's ability to detect people and objects without disrupting standard mobile services like calls and internet access. This capability leverages existing 5G infrastructure and Tiami's PolyRAN software, which effectively turns base stations into wide-area sensors.
