iPhone Satellite Chat: Reach Anyone, Anywhere
15 Jan
Summary
- iPhone 14 and up now support sending messages via satellite.
- Satellite messaging works with iMessage and standard SMS.
- Only emergency contacts can send SMS messages via satellite.

Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite feature, first launched with the iPhone 14, has been significantly enhanced with iOS 18 to allow users to send messages even without cellular service. This new functionality ensures that iPhone users, specifically those with iPhone 14 or later models, can remain connected in the most remote areas, seamlessly integrating with iMessage while maintaining end-to-end encryption for privacy.
The messaging system supports both iMessage and standard SMS formats when operating via satellite. While iMessage offers full send and receive capabilities, SMS messages have a more restricted functionality. Users can send SMS to any contact, but can only receive them from pre-designated emergency contacts, excluding RCS compatibility for now.
This advanced feature aims to provide a crucial communication lifeline for users venturing off the grid. With the expansion of SOS via satellite to include general messaging, Apple continues to prioritize user safety and connectivity, offering peace of mind in situations where traditional networks are unavailable.
