22 Mar
Summary
- New feature allows iPhones and Android devices to share files.
- Initially, only Google's Pixel 10 series supports cross-platform sharing.
- Quick Share on Android now integrates with Apple's AirDrop for transfers.
Google has introduced a feature allowing iPhones and Android devices to share files, ending a period where cross-platform sharing was not possible. Currently, this functionality is limited to Google's latest Pixel 10 series. Previously, iPhones could only share with other Apple devices via AirDrop, and Android devices with other Androids using Quick Share.
The new capability enables Quick Share on Android to discover and connect with nearby iPhones and Macs. Users initiate a transfer by selecting files on their Android device, then choosing the target iPhone. The iPhone receives an AirDrop prompt to accept the file. Google assures strong security measures have been implemented and tested by external experts.
This file-sharing advancement follows other recent compatibility efforts between Apple and Google. In May 2024, both companies released features to detect unwanted Bluetooth trackers on iOS and Android. Furthermore, iOS 18, expected later in 2024, will include RCS messaging support, enhancing communication between iPhone and Android users.
Google plans to enhance and expand this file-sharing experience to more Android devices in the future. For now, Pixel 10 owners can explore the feature with iPhone users, signifying a collaborative effort to improve user experience despite past competition.
