IonQ Cracks Quantum Computing Error Code
23 Sep
Summary
- IonQ demonstrated a real-time quantum error correction decoder on a standard CPU.
- A single processor can now fix quantum errors in real time, removing a bottleneck.
- The dual-decoder system tested up to 408 logical qubits with minimal added runtime.
IonQ Inc. announced on Tuesday a major advancement in quantum computing, demonstrating the first end-to-end real-time quantum error correction decoder. This groundbreaking system operates on a standard CPU, overcoming a significant hurdle that previously required quantum computers to pause for error correction.
Nicolas Delfosse, quantum research lead at IonQ, highlighted the successful validation across hundreds of logical qubits and millions of operations. He noted that the decoder's ability to run on a single CPU offers a practical route to commercial-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing.
The company's dual-decoder system was tested using benchmark circuits, simulating up to 408 logical qubits and over 31.5 million quantum operations. Under typical noise conditions, the decoder reportedly added a mere 0.02% to the total run time.
Following this announcement, IonQ shares saw a notable increase in after-hours trading. Analysts at Wedbush reiterated an Outperform rating with a $75 price target, while the average consensus Buy rating across analysts stands at $64.
