Instagram's PG-13 Pact: Social Media vs. Movies
31 Mar
Summary
- Instagram will display a disclaimer clarifying its content settings.
- The new disclaimer will explain differences between social media and movies.
- MPA confirms it did not partner with Meta on Instagram's teen content.

Instagram is introducing a new disclaimer for teen users and their parents, set to launch on April 15. This message will highlight the differences between social media content moderation and movie ratings. The update comes after an agreement between Meta and the Motion Picture Association (MPA).
The disclaimer will state that Instagram's content settings were not developed in partnership with the MPA, and the organization is not rating any content on the platform. It will clarify that while MPA's public guidelines inspired Instagram's updated content settings, the two systems operate differently.
Charles Rivkin, CEO of the MPA, emphasized that the agreement distinguishes the MPA's film ratings from Instagram's tools for teen accounts. Meta stated its goal was to help parents understand teen content policies by drawing inspiration from familiar frameworks, rigorously reviewing and updating them against 13+ movie ratings criteria.
