Instagram Scraps E2EE Due to Safety Concerns
14 Mar
Summary
- Instagram is removing end-to-end encryption for direct messages.
- Meta cites child safety concerns and regulatory pressure for the change.
- Users are advised to download E2EE chats before the feature is discontinued.

Instagram has begun phasing out its end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for direct messages, a feature introduced in 2023 to enhance user privacy. The company is actively notifying users within the app and updating its support pages to guide them through the transition. Users are strongly encouraged to download any existing E2EE chats and images before the feature is completely discontinued.
This decision by Meta, Instagram's parent company, appears to be influenced by mounting pressure from global regulators concerning child safety protocols on social platforms. As recently as 2024, governmental bodies, including attorneys general from Nevada and New Mexico, have raised objections to E2EE, arguing it hinders the detection of child sexual exploitation. Meta is reportedly shifting users to WhatsApp for continued E2EE communication.
