The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Mangrol, the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited, on October 12, 2026. This indigenously built vessel is designed to enhance the Navy's capacity to detect and neutralize underwater threats in coastal and shallow waters.
Constructed with over 80 percent indigenous content, INS Mangrol represents a significant stride in India's defense manufacturing prowess under the 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives. It is equipped with advanced systems like the Abhay Hull-Mounted Sonar and Mareech decoy system, alongside lightweight torpedoes and indigenous rocket launchers.
The vessel's capabilities extend to underwater surveillance and mine warfare, complementing its primary anti-submarine role. Its induction is crucial for protecting ports and coastal approaches, and it will operate alongside other naval assets to strengthen overall maritime security against evolving underwater threats.
