27 Dec
Summary
- A new standard, IS 19445:2025, has been established for bomb disposal systems.
- This standard aims to improve India's security preparedness and manufacturing quality.
- It addresses a gap where international standards were not fully suitable.

The Bureau of Indian Standards has introduced IS 19445:2025, the nation's first specific standard for bomb disposal systems, significantly enhancing security preparedness. This crucial development aims to provide clear performance benchmarks for manufacturers and procurement agencies, fostering uniformity in evaluation practices. Its implementation is expected to elevate the quality of bomb disposal equipment deployed in vital security operations across India.
The new standard was developed in response to requests from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Terminal Ballistic Research Laboratory, addressing a critical gap in existing security frameworks. It outlines comprehensive guidelines for assessing bomb disposal systems against blast loads and splinter effects, ensuring robust performance evaluations tailored to Indian conditions.
This initiative arises from the inadequacy of existing international standards, which are either inaccessible or not fully adapted to the unique threat landscapes faced by Indian forces. By establishing this standard, India seeks to bolster the effectiveness of bomb disposal units from armed forces, police, and civilian agencies confronting diverse explosive threats.
