India's AI Boom Risks Skills Gap, Nasscom Warns
14 Jul
Summary
- Over 90% of Indian early-career tech professionals use AI.
- Nasscom warns AI reliance may erode fundamental engineering skills.
- Only 23% of India's young tech workforce are 'AI-native'.

India stands at a critical juncture regarding its burgeoning tech talent, with over 90% of early-career professionals actively integrating AI into their work. Despite this widespread adoption, Nasscom, the apex IT industry body, has issued a significant warning. The organization cautions that a growing dependency on AI for routine coding tasks could detrimentally impact foundational engineering skills.
Nasscom's "The State of AI-Native Talent in India" report reveals that while a majority are "AI-proficient," a mere 23% qualify as "AI-native." This distinction is crucial, as the industry body emphasizes the risk of cultivating an AI-reliant workforce rather than one that is genuinely AI-native. Such a scenario could hinder India's ambition to become a global leader in AI technology.
To counter this trend, Nasscom advocates for a dual approach involving both academia and industry. Educational institutions are called upon to reinforce fundamental engineering principles and reimagine assessment methods beyond traditional coding. Simultaneously, companies must redesign their onboarding and mentorship programs to deliberately create opportunities for junior engineers to develop independent judgment and orchestration skills, which are often bypassed by AI-driven automation.
