AI Democratization Key for India's Tech Leap
28 Jul
Summary
- India needs to democratize AI for significant advancements.
- Reliance on IITs for AI research should be broadened.
- Digital India aspirations must exceed current achievements like UPI.

Scientist Srijan Pal Singh has urged India to democratize artificial intelligence to foster significant advancements in the rapidly evolving field. He noted that AI tools are essential for basic human welfare and must be integrated into governance systems. Singh acknowledged India's impressive AI training capacity, with nearly 25 million hours imparted, and its progress in AI hardware and semiconductor projects.
However, Singh cautioned against over-reliance on a single institutional framework like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for AI research. He advocated for shifting policy focus from elite institutions to a wider range of higher education bodies and including the private sector. This competitive approach, he suggested, is crucial as AI development is now a commercially driven endeavor rather than solely a research project.
Reflecting on past successes, Singh cited India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as a triumph but stressed that aspirations for a digital India must be significantly higher. He recounted how former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's foresight led to the BrahMos missile project, a successful Indo-Russian collaboration, underscoring the importance of innovation and strategic partnerships.
