India Builds AI Future: Infrastructure is Key

India is rapidly establishing itself as a significant global hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) development and innovation. Policymakers and industry leaders are focusing on a comprehensive approach to AI governance, recognizing that the ecosystem extends beyond algorithms to include critical infrastructure, specialized talent, and research capabilities.

The nation's expanding digital economy, supported by over 900 million internet users, is a key driver. Multinational corporations are enhancing their engineering and data science operations within India, while domestic firms integrate AI into their services. Global Capability Centres, numbering over 1,500, are increasingly functioning as global research hubs for AI.

Significant investments are being made in digital infrastructure, including high-performance computing facilities and data centers. India's data center capacity is projected to grow substantially by 2030, raising discussions about energy consumption. Furthermore, India is strengthening its semiconductor supply chain through initiatives like the India Semiconductor Mission.

Human capital development is also crucial, with expanding university programs in AI and machine learning. While generative AI automates some tasks, leading to workforce restructuring, companies are focusing on reskilling their employees. Research institutions play a vital role in advancing AI models and applied technologies.

Currently, India lacks dedicated AI legislation. Instead, AI deployment is governed by a combination of existing laws covering digital technologies, infrastructure, and labor. This layered approach addresses the complex environment supporting AI development, acknowledging that effective governance requires more than just regulating algorithms.
