India Mandates Quality Checks for Phone Screen Protectors
22 Sep
Summary
- BIS certification is now mandatory for smartphone screen protectors.
- The new regulation takes effect on April 1, 2027.
- This move aims to curb low-quality products and boost domestic manufacturing.
The Indian government has implemented a compulsory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for smartphone screen protectors. This regulation requires manufacturers to obtain regulatory approval before selling these products in the country. The mandate, effective from April 1, 2027, is designed to prevent the sale of substandard screen protectors and support domestic producers.
Smartphone screen protectors are the 66th product category to be included under the compulsory registration order, joining items like smartphones and laptops. Optiemus Infracom, a domestic manufacturer, is increasing its production capacity for tempered glass screen protectors, utilizing technology from Corning. The company anticipates significant revenue from this business segment.
Industry bodies estimate that this new BIS certification will catalyze a substantial quality-driven industry, estimated between Rs 12,000-16,000 crore annually. It is also expected to generate considerable employment and GST revenues, further strengthening India's position as a manufacturing hub for such accessories.
