Summary
- India's RDI Scheme offers debt financing for drone development.
- ideaForge's YETI drone targets 200 kg payload for military logistics.
- The scheme funds scale-up but doesn't guarantee military purchase.

India is supporting the development of ideaForge's Project YETI, an autonomous drone capable of carrying up to 200 kg for logistics. The government, through its Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Scheme, has issued a Letter of Intent for debt financing of up to ₹151 crore to help scale the technology. This scheme, launched on November 3, 2025, aims to finance the transition from early prototypes to viable products.
YETI is currently at Technology Readiness Level 4, with a target of TRL 9 within three years. Despite attracting public funding, a firm commitment from military users to acquire the aircraft has not yet been publicly disclosed as of August 2026. This situation exemplifies India's 'missing middle' challenge in defence innovation.
The RDI Scheme, with a ₹1-lakh-crore outlay over six years, offers capital for deep-technology companies beyond the initial prototype stage. This addresses a critical funding gap that traditional banks and venture investors may not fill due to the long development cycles and uncertain procurement schedules in the defence sector.
Past audits of DRDO projects reveal significant delays and missed objectives, underscoring the difficulties in development, testing, and induction. While the RDI Scheme provides crucial time and financial support, its ultimate success hinges on converting approvals into disbursements, prototypes into trials, and trials into actual production orders and repeat purchases.
