India Tightens AI Content Rules on Social Media
11 Feb
Summary
- AI content must now be clearly labeled on social media.
- Illegal content, including deepfakes, must be removed within hours.
- Non-compliance risks loss of legal protection for platforms.

India has established new curbs on artificial intelligence content displayed across social media platforms, with these restrictions commencing on February 20th. A key mandate is the prominent labeling of all AI-generated content for users to easily identify.
Furthermore, the new rules drastically shorten the window for social media companies to remove illegal material. Content deemed unlawful by a court or government authority must be taken down within three hours. Specifically, sensitive content involving non-consensual nudity and deepfakes faces an even tighter deadline of two hours.
