Summary
- US military is testing laser tech for in-flight drone charging.
- The Aerial ReCharge system allows remote power beaming.
- This technology extends drone mission time and reduces risk.

A new laser-based technology is undergoing trials in the United States to enable remote, in-flight recharging of drones. Developed by PowerLight Technologies, the Aerial ReCharge (ARC) system utilizes directed lasers to transmit power wirelessly to a receiver on the drone. This "power beaming" capability means drones can operate for extended periods without landing for battery changes.
The U.S. Department of War's Operational Energy - Innovation Directorate has awarded a contract for the development of this innovative system. The ARC transmitter unit is autonomous and can track the drone, providing a continuous power supply during flight. This technology is designed for various drone classes and can also recharge payloads, enhancing mission flexibility and reducing exposure in hazardous situations.
