iFi has launched the iDSD GR 2, a portable DAC/amp aiming to surpass its five-star rated predecessor, the iFi xDSD Gryphon. Revealed at High End Vienna, this latest creation boasts substantial internal upgrades despite its familiar design. The GR 2 delivers approximately 50% more output power, reaching up to 1,513mW RMS, while simultaneously achieving greater dynamic range and less distortion, thanks to a new Burr Brown PCM1795 chipset. This chipset also enables true 32-bit resolution audio and retains iFi's signature warm, analog sound.
A significant enhancement is the new color OLED touchscreen, which provides a much more intuitive user experience compared to the previous black and white display. This upgrade allows for swift navigation between core settings and connectivity options. Furthermore, battery life sees a notable improvement, with the GR 2 equipped with a 4,900mAh capacity, about a third more than its predecessor. The device also features JVC's K2HD technology, licensed exclusively to iFi, designed to restore harmonic detail and bring audio closer to its original intent.
The iDSD GR 2 offers versatile connectivity, including Bluetooth 5.4 with advanced aptX codecs and LDAC, alongside 4.4mm and 3.5mm audio ports and a USB-C connection. Early impressions suggest a remarkably balanced audio presentation with intricate detail. The device is also notably easier to use than previous models, with seamless adjustment of settings and connectivity modes. The GR 2 launches at a competitive price of $529 / £529 / AU$849, positioning it as a compelling option for hi-res audio enthusiasts seeking both high-end specifications and user-friendly operation.
