Texting Strangers Beats AI for Loneliness
17 Mar
Summary
- Texting a peer reduced loneliness more than a chatbot.
- Chatbots offered similar benefits to journaling, study showed.
- Empathy provision may be key to alleviating loneliness.

A recent study involving college students has found that human connection significantly outperforms AI chatbots in alleviating loneliness. Researchers from the University of British Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania assigned nearly 300 first-semester students to either text a peer daily, message a chatbot named Sam, or keep a journal.
After two weeks, students who texted a human peer reported substantial reductions in loneliness. Those interacting with the chatbot showed minor improvements, comparable to the journaling group. This indicates that AI chatbots may not offer the same depth of companionship as human interaction.
Interestingly, the chatbot was programmed to express high levels of empathy, yet participants in those conversations displayed less empathy themselves compared to interactions with other humans. The study suggests that the ability to both give and receive empathy might be crucial for combating loneliness effectively.
This research comes as AI integration among young people grows; surveys show many teens use AI for advice and companionship. However, prior studies indicate that prolonged chatbot use might inadvertently increase feelings of loneliness, highlighting the irreplaceable value of genuine human connection.
