25 Mar
Summary
- HP IQ is an offline chatbot for PCs, unlike cloud-based alternatives.
- Developed by former Humane Ai Pin team members, it runs on-device.
- The AI can perform tasks like summarizing documents and transcribing audio.

HP is introducing HP IQ, a novel AI chatbot for its commercial laptops that functions without an internet connection. This on-device AI assistant is being developed by many of the same individuals who previously worked on the Humane Ai Pin, including its former head, Imran Chaudhri. Unlike cloud-based AIs, HP IQ processes information locally, enhancing user privacy by keeping sensitive prompts off the internet.
The AI, based on Humane's former CosmOS system, can execute tasks like creating bulleted lists, summarizing documents, and transcribing audio. It utilizes OpenAI's GPT OSS 20b AI model, which runs on-device, though it may access online data for real-time information like weather or stock prices. This rudimentary AI is not designed for complex reasoning or agentic tasks, requiring users to manually provide files for analysis.
HP IQ is intended for professional use and will eventually integrate with Android phones via Google's D2DI platform for file sharing. The AI application is compatible with AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm Snapdragon chips and will be rolled out via an update later this spring, with consumer laptops expected to receive the feature by 2027. HP aims to differentiate its AI offering from Microsoft's Copilot by focusing on work-specific applications.
