- Homey Portal offers a dedicated touchscreen for smart home control.
- It supports over 70,000 devices from 2,000+ brands, including Matter.
- The Portal requires a separate Homey hub for full functionality.

Smart home control has become notably complex, often requiring multiple steps for simple actions. Homey, a platform acquired by LG, has introduced the Homey Portal, a touchscreen device designed to offer a more intuitive user experience. The Portal, available for pre-order at an introductory price of $249/€249, features a 2.8-inch touchscreen and a stainless steel dial for device management.
This dedicated controller boasts support for over 70,000 devices across more than 2,000 brands, along with Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread compatibility, addressing common interoperability issues. Unlike voice assistants or apps, it aims to provide direct, physical control akin to a light switch. The interface is customizable and integrates with Homey's Flow automation engine.
However, the Homey Portal is not a standalone hub and necessitates a connection to a Homey hub, such as the Homey Pro Mini ($249) or Homey Pro ($449), or a monthly cloud subscription. This setup ensures local device communication, allowing control even without an internet connection. Homey also recently introduced a feature for direct device updates for Matter, Z-Wave, and Zigbee devices.
Homey distinguishes itself from competitors like Aqara and Shelly by emphasizing ease of installation and broad device support. While Home Assistant offers an open-source alternative, Homey provides a more plug-and-play solution. Its integration with LG's AI Home platform further emphasizes a focus on home energy management.
