Blinding Headlights Ruin Night Drives
19 Feb
Summary
- Half of drivers report headlight glare worsening this winter.
- One in ten drivers fear dark roads due to poor lighting.
- 22% of drivers missed social events due to night driving fears.

New studies reveal that glare from LED headlights is significantly impacting driver confidence and their willingness to travel after dark. A recent RAC survey found that over half of drivers affected by dazzling headlights consider the issue worse this winter compared to last. Concurrently, Vauxhall's research indicates that one in ten motorists are now afraid to drive at night due to glare and poorly lit roads.
This growing problem is curtailing daily activities for many. Nearly a fifth of drivers polled by Vauxhall now drive less at night, and 45% of motorists reduce their night driving due to feeling unsafe. The consequences extend to social lives, with 22% of drivers admitting to missing social events because they had to travel after dusk. Some drivers even opt for longer routes to avoid poorly lit roads.
In response to mounting concerns, the government has been advised to update headlight standards. TRL studies, funded by the Department for Transport, have objectively linked glare to bright headlights and specific road conditions. Experts emphasize that headlight glare is becoming a mobility issue, affecting drivers' ability to spot hazards and judge oncoming traffic. As a result, drivers are actively seeking solutions, with a significant majority supporting further research and regulatory amendments.
