Google's SynthID Fights AI Deception in Search & Chrome
19 May
Summary
- Google integrated SynthID and C2PA into Search and Chrome.
- Over 100 billion images and videos watermarked by SynthID.
- OpenAI, Kakao, and ElevenLabs will adopt SynthID technology.
At Google I/O 2026, Google announced a major enhancement to its SynthID digital watermark technology, expanding its reach to Google Search and the Chrome browser. This integration, alongside content credential verification from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), will empower users to readily identify AI-generated content.
The Gemini app will feature C2PA Content Credentials verification immediately. This expansion to Chrome and Search means users can easily check images, audio, and videos for AI origins. As deepfakes become a greater concern, digital watermarks like SynthID offer a reliable detection method.
Google reported that SynthID has already watermarked over 100 billion images and videos, plus 60,000 years of audio. Furthermore, major entities including OpenAI, Kakao, and ElevenLabs will incorporate SynthID into their products, marking AI-generated content from platforms like ChatGPT.
Both SynthID and C2PA work in tandem to detect AI creation. C2PA provides metadata, while SynthID applies an invisible watermark that persists even if metadata is lost. OpenAI highlighted that these systems reinforce each other, with watermarks offering durability and metadata providing richer context for provenance verification.
