Google Search Boosts Links in AI Overviews

Google Search has announced an update to its AI-powered features, emphasizing the visibility of source links. According to Robby Stein, vice president of Google Search, links will now be more prominently displayed within AI Overviews and AI Mode on desktop. These links will appear in a pop-up when hovering over sources, accompanied by descriptions and images of linked articles.

This new interface is designed to be more engaging, facilitating easier access to web content. The enhancements come as Google continues to expand its AI search functionalities, amidst concerns about potential impacts on traffic to news publishers and other websites. The company acknowledges the changing landscape of the open web and is exploring ways to support publishers.

Previously, the European Commission initiated an investigation into Google's AI search features, examining competition rules and content usage from digital publishers. Google has indicated it is considering options for publishers to opt out of appearing in AI search results, while also increasing source linking in AI Mode.
