Google's Nano Banana 2: Speedy, But Flawed
11 Mar
Summary
- Nano Banana 2 offers speed but sacrifices some precision.
- The model struggles with complex photo editing tasks.
- It's faster than the pro model but less refined.

Google released Nano Banana 2 in late February, three months after its last AI image model update. This second-generation model aims for the speed of the original with the world knowledge of its advanced counterparts for enhanced realism.
Initial testing indicates Nano Banana 2 is indeed swift, reminding users of Google's strength in AI. However, the model exhibits performance limitations, particularly in photo editing tasks. While it successfully removed minor reflections from glasses, it failed to fix a significant reflection on a movie poster, a task previous models also struggled with.
Compared to the pro model, Nano Banana 2 is considerably faster, generating images in under a minute in fast mode, whereas the pro model requires 2-5 minutes. This speed comes at the cost of precision. For instance, placing subjects on a specific university's football field was less refined by Nano Banana 2 than by the pro model, which independently added legible stadium text.
For larger stylistic changes, both Nano Banana 2 and the pro model performed similarly, though the pro model showed slightly more fine detail when emulating styles like Pointillism. Google has removed the original Nano Banana model, leaving users to choose between Nano Banana 2 for speed or the pro model for more precise, albeit slower, results.
