Summary
- Google's new smart speaker offers a balance of sound, size, and design.
- It supports Matter and Thread, enhancing smart home connectivity.
- Gemini integration allows for natural language understanding and complex requests.
Google's latest smart speaker, the Google Home Speaker, is currently available for approximately $79, marking a $20 discount. This Gemini-powered device, launched in June, is praised for its sound quality, compact size, and modern design. It is smaller than previous models, making it easy to place anywhere, yet delivers loud, clear 360-degree audio.
Smart home enthusiasts will appreciate its support for Matter and Thread, which facilitates control over a variety of compatible devices. Additionally, it can function as an audio output for the Google TV Streamer 4K, offering improved dialogue clarity for television viewing.
The speaker's integration with Gemini is a significant upgrade, offering superior natural language understanding and the ability to handle complex, conversational commands. While it can answer general knowledge questions effectively, users should be aware that some advanced features, like Gemini Live for extended conversations, require a $10-a-month Google Home Premium subscription and may experience occasional slowness.
