Google has launched Edge Eloquent, a new AI dictation app designed to offer free, high-quality speech-to-text transcriptions.
This application, powered by Google's Gemma models, focuses on capturing the intended meaning of spoken words. It automatically edits out hesitations such as "ums" and "ahs," as well as mid-sentence errors, to produce a refined draft.
A significant aspect of Edge Eloquent is its commitment to user privacy. Google states that all machine learning processing, apart from some advanced features requiring cloud support, occurs locally on the iOS device. This ensures that audio, confidential conversations, and personal data remain on the user's device.
The app is currently available on the Apple App Store, supporting English dictations. However, it is not yet accessible in the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area due to ongoing regulatory approval processes.
Users can improve transcription accuracy by connecting the app to their Gmail account or manually adding frequently used terms in the Dictionaries tab. Edge Eloquent operates entirely free of charge with no usage limits, though Google has not yet announced plans for an Android version.
