Google DeepMind's AI Revolutionizes Rapid, Accurate Weather Forecasting
18 Nov
Summary
- Google DeepMind's new AI model, WeatherNext 2, generates forecasts 8x faster than previous model
- WeatherNext 2 can predict 99.9% of weather variables like temperature and wind with high accuracy
- WeatherNext 2 can produce hundreds of potential outcomes in under a minute using Google's TPU chips

On November 18th, 2025, Google DeepMind announced the launch of its latest AI weather forecasting model, WeatherNext 2. The new system represents a significant leap forward in weather prediction capabilities, generating forecasts 8 times faster than the company's previous model while also achieving 99.9% accuracy on key variables like temperature and wind.
According to Peter Battaglia, Google DeepMind's senior director of research and sustainability, the company is now ready to move WeatherNext 2 out of the experimental phase and into the hands of users. "We have confidence that our forecasts are really quite effective and quite useful," Battaglia stated in a briefing with reporters.
The new AI model can produce hundreds of potential weather outcomes from a particular starting point in less than a minute, using one of Google's powerful TPU chips. This is a dramatic improvement over the several hours typically required to generate similar predictions using traditional physics-based models on a supercomputer.
With its enhanced speed and precision, WeatherNext 2 is poised to revolutionize the field of weather forecasting, providing users with more timely and reliable information to plan their activities and prepare for changing conditions.
