Google AI Search Cripples Publisher Traffic
25 Oct
Summary
- Google's AI Overviews significantly reduce publisher website traffic.
- Publishers face catastrophic traffic declines due to AI search.
- Some publishers opt out of AI features to mitigate traffic loss.

The digital publishing industry's long-standing reliance on Google for traffic is being fundamentally challenged by the search giant's AI-powered features. Launched in 2024, AI Overviews summarize web content at the top of search results, often without driving users to click on original sources. This has raised alarms among publishers, with the News/Media Alliance predicting catastrophic consequences.
Investigations have revealed a substantial impact on publisher visibility since AI Overviews began appearing for a significant portion of news-related searches. By August 2024, these AI summaries started displacing established media sites from top search rankings. Further complicating matters, Google launched AI Mode in May 2025, a chatbot-like interface that further centralizes information without guaranteed traffic to external sites.
Reports from June 2025 indicate sharp declines in search traffic for prominent news organizations, with data showing a decrease from 44 percent to 35.5 percent for The New York Times over three years. Trade associations like Digital Content Next have also reported traffic losses among their members, ranging from 1 to 25 percent between May and June 2025. DMG Media in the UK reported an alarming drop of up to 89 percent in click-through rates.
Despite Google's claims of stable click volume and diverse traffic distribution, publishers globally have pursued legal action, though many cases have been dismissed. In response to publisher pushback and regulatory scrutiny, Google has begun making sources more prominent in its AI features and is piloting programs that license content for AI development, including a potential payment system for content used in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
