Google Search Stumbles with New AI Overviews
23 May
Summary
- Google search now shows AI Overviews instead of definitions for certain terms.
- Users report issues with AI Overviews appearing for words like 'disregard'.
- The search engine's transition to AI is causing unexpected search result changes.
Google is encountering difficulties with its newly implemented AI Overviews, which have replaced traditional search definitions. As of May 23, 2026, searches for words such as "disregard," "stop," and "ignore" are yielding AI Overviews and blank spaces instead of dictionary definitions. This behavior has been confirmed by multiple staff members and widely reported.
Users have expressed their concerns on social media, prompting publications to cover the issue. While accessing online dictionaries is still possible, they now appear below the AI Overviews or a grid of related articles. Google has been contacted for comment regarding these search result anomalies and their efforts to resolve them.
