Google Accused of Feeding AI Bots False Data
14 Oct
Summary
- Google may be deliberately altering search results for automated services.
- Around 8% of analyzed search result pages showed signs of manipulation.
- This tactic could disrupt AI data scraping and SEO tool analysis.

A recent report indicates Google may be intentionally manipulating search result pages (SERPs) that are accessed by rank-tracking tools and other automated services. This strategy, termed "SERP poisoning," aims to disrupt AI scrapers that collect Google's search data, potentially for use in competing AI services.
Nozzle, a search engine results page monitoring firm, analyzed 27.5 million SERPs and found that approximately 8% of them appeared to be poisoned. This manipulation was observed on both desktop and mobile versions of Google Search. The altered results may display less relevant information, often sourced from social media platforms, instead of accurately ranked links.
While Google battles against third-party AI scrapers, this tactic of serving misleading data could inadvertently affect legitimate SEO services and rank trackers. This shift from blocking automated tools to actively poisoning the data they access suggests a more proactive effort by Google to undermine the value of scraped search information.
