Google is expanding its client-side encryption (CSE) offering with the rollout of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Gmail on Android and iOS. Initially available to enterprise users, this new functionality allows eligible Workspace customers to compose and read encrypted emails seamlessly within the Gmail mobile applications. This development follows the introduction of E2EE for Gmail on the web over a year ago.
Encrypted messages sent to recipients using the Gmail app will appear in their inbox like any other email. Even recipients without the app can securely read and reply to these messages through their web browser. This integration aims to provide high levels of privacy and data protection with a user-friendly experience for businesses, from small operations to large enterprises and public sector organizations.
To enable this feature, administrators must first activate Android and iOS clients in the CSE admin interface. Users then select an additional encryption option via a lock icon before sending an email. The E2EE functionality is available immediately for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, though Enterprise users require the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-on for enhanced security and compliance tools.
