GM EVs Unlock Universal Charging Access
10 Jun
Summary
- GM's Energy Pass allows charging at multiple brands.
- Vehicle-to-grid enables EVs to power homes during outages.
- New firmware update brings full V2G to GM Energy systems.

General Motors is expanding its electric vehicle capabilities with two significant updates. The company has launched Energy Pass, a unified system designed to simplify public charging for GM electric vehicle owners. This new interface will initially support charging stations from Tesla, Electrify America, and IONNA, with plans to integrate EVgo and ChargePoint soon. Energy Pass aims to provide a seamless experience for finding and paying for charging, broadening access to the existing network.
Furthermore, GM is rolling out a firmware update that enables full vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality for its GM Energy vehicle-to-home systems. This technology allows electric vehicles to send power back to the local electrical grid. While requiring specific home setups and compatible vehicles, V2G offers owners the benefit of using their EV as a power source during electrical outages, essentially serving as a backup generator.
