The experimental flight campaign included a longest hybrid-electric segment that extended beyond two hours. This was made possible by GE Aerospace's megawatt-class, multi-kilovolt propulsion system, which was developed as part of NASA's Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration project.
The advanced electric powertrain successfully powered the aircraft's propeller and demonstrated the capability to recharge its batteries while in flight. This innovative system offers enhanced climb performance and superior high-altitude capabilities. It effectively addresses challenges such as heat management, reduced atmospheric pressure, and power density.
GE Aerospace has been advancing this technology since receiving a NASA contract in 2021. The company is also pursuing similar advancements through its CFM International RISE program, targeting a reduction of over 20% in fuel burn compared to current commercial engines.
