G-Shock is pushing the boundaries of watchmaking with its "Blue Rose Project" collection, named after the symbol of achieving the impossible. This ambitious endeavor culminates in the release of the MRG-D5000, an $80,000 timepiece that marks the first-ever retail G-Shock with an outer case and bezel entirely made of blue sapphire crystal. This groundbreaking watch is a testament to eight years of dedicated development.
First previewed as a concept in 2017, the idea of sapphire G-Shocks was challenging due to the material's difficulty in machining. The new MRG-D5000, however, utilizes a "Multi-Guard Structure," inspired by traditional Japanese timber framing. This design divides the case into interlocking components to effectively disperse impact, a significant advancement for using brittle sapphire in a shock-resistant watch.
While the MRG-D5000's case is machined from sapphire, its strap is rubber, and lettering on the face is 24-carat gold. Alongside the flagship model, the collection features the $9,500 MRG-B5000SA-2 and the $850 GMW-B5000SB-1A. All models offer 200-meter water resistance, solar power, and radio-controlled timekeeping, embodying G-Shock's fusion of extreme toughness and Japanese engineering.
