Fusion Powers New Defense Lasers

Fusion power startups are revisiting their defense industry roots as climate tech funding slows. Decades ago, fusion science emerged from research into thermonuclear weapons, and this national security link is resurfacing.

The defense sector's interest in laser weapons has intensified, particularly with the rise of drone warfare. Traditional air defense systems struggle against numerous small drones, making expensive missile intercepts inefficient. Laser weapons, powered by electricity, offer a more cost-effective solution.

Xcimer, a laser-based fusion startup, recently announced a partnership with defense conglomerate RTX. This collaboration involves RTX Ventures providing funding to Xcimer, while RTX explores using Xcimer's advanced lasers for defense applications.

Xcimer operates the world's largest privately owned laser system, aiming to develop a power plant. While its current laser system is less powerful than required for power generation, it is sufficient to attract defense industry attention.

Another fusion company, Pacific Fusion, has entered into an agreement with the National Nuclear Security Administration for high-energy-density fusion experiments. Their new demonstration facility in New Mexico could support leading defense applications due to the powerful fusion reactions it will generate.

This renewed focus on defense applications provides a vital financial lifeline for fusion startups, while simultaneously advancing critical national security technologies. The synergy between fusion energy research and defense needs represents a significant, albeit overdue, resurgence.
