5 Jun
Summary
- A mile-long ship, larger than current cruise liners, is planned.
- The vessel will house 80,000 people and circumnavigate the globe.
- Onboard nuclear power and a hospital are key features.

The ambitious concept of the Freedom Ship, a mile-long 'floating city' designed to house approximately 80,000 people, is being revived. This colossal vessel aims to continuously circumnavigate the globe, functioning as a self-governing entity beyond traditional port control. Its design includes a nuclear power plant, a state-of-the-art hospital, educational institutions, and extensive entertainment facilities like a 15,000-seat athletic arena.
The project, initially proposed in the 1990s by engineer Norman Nixon, faced setbacks after his passing in 2012. Freedom Cruise Line International has recently appointed a dedicated team to advance the endeavor, with the primary challenge now being securing the estimated £12bn funding. The vision is to create a libertarian-style community where residents can live, work, and conduct business in international waters.
Designed with a human-centered approach, the ship will feature numerous walkways, green spaces, and a tram network for internal transport. While experts acknowledge the monumental scale, concerns remain regarding structural integrity and construction logistics. Despite these challenges, the Freedom Ship aims to offer a unique, ever-changing vista for its permanent inhabitants as it journeys around the world.
