Summary
- New Ford EV chargers allow the Fathom truck to power homes.
- Chargers are half the cost of previous Ford bidirectional options.
- Fathom can supply over 10 kW, potentially powering essential appliances.
Ford recently announced two new EV chargers designed for its upcoming Fathom pickup truck, positioning the vehicle as a mobile power source for homes and the grid. These new devices are approximately half the cost of Ford's earlier equivalents, potentially broadening access to vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology.
The Fathom truck is engineered to supply over 10 kW of power, sufficient to substitute for a small generator. While this capacity may not power an entire U.S. home, it could keep essential appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners operational for extended periods during power outages.
One option, the Home Power Station, allows users to optimize energy costs by charging the Fathom when electricity rates are low and discharging power back to the home during peak times. Ford indicates this unit will cost around $650. The Home Backup Power package includes the Home Power Station and a Home Backup Panel, enabling the Fathom to power parts or all of a home during blackouts, with an estimated cost of $2,100.
Both charger options will allow Fathom owners to join virtual power plants (VPPs), systems that manage distributed energy resources. As grid demand increases, VPPs are being explored to help manage congestion. Fathom owners can earn income by selling electricity back to the grid, with potential annual earnings exceeding $1,000 depending on grid needs and participation levels.
