V8 vs Turbo V6: Truck Engine Wars Heat Up

The automotive industry is witnessing a divergence in powertrain strategies between Ford and General Motors for their flagship pickup trucks. Ford has notably reduced the availability of its naturally aspirated 5.0L Coyote V8 for the 2026 model year F-150, with this engine now exclusively offered on five trim levels. The brand is increasingly emphasizing its turbocharged EcoBoost V6 options, including a 2.7L and a more powerful 3.5L, alongside the 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid.
In contrast, General Motors is reinforcing its commitment to V8 engines. The upcoming 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 will feature two new naturally aspirated V8s from GM's sixth-generation Small Block family. These include a 5.7L V8 replacing the current 5.3L and a 6.6L V8 succeeding the 6.2L, with the latter expected to produce over 470 horsepower. These new V8s are anticipated to eventually be integrated into GM's full-size SUV lineup.
