Flourish, a neuro-AI startup, has secured $500 million in funding, with a reported valuation of $2.5 billion. The company's ambitious goal is to reinvent AI by emulating the human brain's efficiency and learning processes. Cofounders Rob Williams and Thomas Reardon aim to build 'Cortex AI,' a synthetic intelligence system that matches the brain's computational capacity, learning efficiency, and power budget.

This new approach contrasts sharply with current large language models (LLMs), which are notoriously power-hungry and require extensive data for training without true continuous learning. Reardon highlights that a human brain uses approximately 20 watts, while AI chips consume significantly more. Flourish's vision is to create an AI that operates on 50 watts or less, adapting dynamically like a human mind.

The company's strategy involves neuroscientists conducting wet lab experiments alongside AI researchers. This interdisciplinary approach seeks to uncover the brain's architectural secrets, particularly focusing on cortical columns. Early funding came from investors including Jeff Bezos, who contributed $50 million. Flourish plans to release near-term products based on their developing models, paving the way for a complete AI paradigm shift.
