Flock Safety Offers Buyouts Amid Backlash

Embattled surveillance firm Flock Safety is offering a generous voluntary severance package to its employees. The company anticipates a substantial number of its 1,500 staff members will accept the buyouts, which are described as the most generous the company has ever provided. This initiative allows Flock to part with employees affected by the ongoing controversy surrounding its license plate recognition technology.

The decision follows increasing criticism and scrutiny of Flock's technology. Reports have surfaced detailing 46 cases where law enforcement allegedly misused the system, including instances of stalking. In response, states like Florida and Texas have ceased using Flock's services. Advocacy groups also reported that 90 cities dropped the company's technology in August alone, a significant increase from the prior month.

CEO Garrett Langley acknowledged that the public outcry has primarily impacted "internal morale." The voluntary departure program aims to mitigate potential layoffs and address the dissatisfaction within the company's workforce.
