Flipboard has introduced social websites, a new platform feature enabling creators and publishers to establish their own distinct web presences. These social websites are designed to centralize conversations and content from across the open social web, including decentralized platforms such as Mastodon and Bluesky, alongside public web content. Users can consolidate posts, videos, podcasts, newsletters, and other discussions into a unified space that creators fully control. This includes integrating profiles and content from platforms like Threads, YouTube, various blogs, and RSS feeds.
This initiative represents Flipboard's vision for a new social media paradigm, prioritizing community ownership and content organization. The company aims to simplify access to the open social web for publishers and creators. "Social websites help podcasters, creators and publications build communities around their work and control the experience, including the algorithm," stated Flipboard CEO Mike McCue. Publishers like The Verge and WIRED are already utilizing this feature, creating hubs for followers to access journalism, podcasts, videos, and discussions. Individual creator David Rushing has launched 'All Net' for NBA fans, aggregating league news and fan conversations.
The creation of a social website begins on surf.social, where users set up a Surf feed by adding sources, assigning hashtags, and applying filters. A custom domain can then be assigned, allowing the social website to be shared widely and exist independently of Surf. Flipboard plans to enhance customization options, including custom headers and colors, further empowering creators to tailor their digital spaces. These social websites are poised to become dedicated destinations for users to follow their interests across the web.
