Firefox Puts AI Choice in Users' Hands
12 Jun
Summary
- Firefox offers users the choice to disable AI features.
- Only 1% of users have fully disabled AI features.
- Firefox launched a VPN with 1.5 million signups recently.

Mozilla's Firefox browser is prioritizing user choice by offering an artificial intelligence (AI) kill switch, allowing users to completely disable or partially turn off AI functionalities. CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo stated this feature was expedited due to community feedback, emphasizing that unlike competitors who integrate AI by default, Firefox provides users autonomy. Despite this, only 1% of Firefox users have fully disabled AI, and 3% have partially done so, indicating that many value integrated AI tools like translation.
Firefox is also introducing its Smart Window feature in beta, enabling users to select their preferred AI models or even bring their own. The company aims for an AI-agnostic approach, contrasting with default integrations seen in other browsers. Privacy is a key focus, with assurances that user data from Smart Window chats is not used for model training and sensitive information is filtered.
In line with its privacy-first approach, Firefox launched a free in-browser VPN last month, which has already garnered 1.5 million signups. Enzor-DeMeo highlighted this as a crucial offering in an era of increasing surveillance and AI's pervasive influence. This initiative aligns with Firefox's broader mission to maintain an open, fair, and competitive internet.
The browser is set for a significant redesign in the fall, codenamed Project Nova, which promises enhanced speed, security, and customization. New features include AI-powered tab grouping and visual upgrades like compact mode and a distinct active tab glow. This update aims to improve user experience while reinforcing Firefox's commitment to an equal playing field on the web for its approximately 200 million monthly users.
