US Bans Foreign Military Drones: Security Fears Rise
22 Jul
Summary
- FCC tentatively banned import of military-grade drones.
- Swarming and infrared drones pose security risks.
- Exemptions extended for non-military drones until 2028.

The Federal Communications Commission has announced a tentative decision to prohibit the import of specific foreign military-grade drones. This potential ban targets technologies like swarming drones and those equipped with infrared capabilities, citing significant risks to national security and public safety. Such drones are capable of overwhelming defenses and conducting persistent surveillance.
This move follows previous actions in December, which initially barred new models of foreign drones. While certain exemptions for non-military drones and components, particularly those not produced in China, have been extended until January 2028, the broader prohibition is set to be open for public comment for 30 days before finalization. The federal government and non-military drone imports would be exempt from the ban.
