3 Dec
Summary
- FCC targets SK Teleco for facilitating PS5 order robocall scam.
- Scam calls impersonate Walmart, urging users to cancel fake PS5 orders.
- Millions of scam calls were placed between January and April.

The Federal Communications Commission has targeted SK Teleco, a lesser-known VoIP provider, for its alleged role in a widespread robocall scam. This fraudulent campaign used fake Walmart orders for PlayStation 5 consoles to deceive consumers. The FCC stated that SK Teleco facilitated millions of these calls between January and April, with the scam intensifying over the past year.
Victims were lured by prerecorded messages claiming an expensive PS5 purchase from their Walmart account. When they pressed '1' to cancel, they were often connected to live operators. These individuals sometimes impersonated federal agencies to extract sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, exacerbating the potential harm.
The FCC has given SK Teleco a strict 48-hour deadline to mitigate the illegal traffic and 14 days to implement preventative measures. Failure to comply could lead to other providers being required to cease accepting call traffic from SK Teleco, marking a significant regulatory action against the provider.
