Airports to Get Facial Recognition Tech

Summary
- CISF proposes facial recognition cameras at four major airports.
- System will match faces against government databases.
- Aims to identify fugitives and suspects in real-time.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has requested approval from the Union home ministry to implement a facial recognition system at four key airports, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata. This initiative aims to enhance security by identifying fugitives and suspects through the use of a government database.
This proposed system will involve cameras equipped with software capable of matching individuals' faces with data held by national security agencies like NATGRID. An integrated Command and Control Centre will manage the data fusion from these cameras. While not all airport cameras will be fitted with this technology, it is planned for strategic locations like entry and exit points.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) already utilizes similar automatic face recognition technology for identifying wanted individuals and missing persons, notably employed during the Delhi riots. The CISF's proposal is under consideration, with the potential for real-time monitoring and surveillance to bolster airport security nationwide.
