Facebook Groups Embrace Reddit-Style Usernames
24 Nov
Summary
- Facebook Groups now allow custom nicknames for posting.
- Nicknames offer an alternative to anonymous posting.
- Feature requires group admin approval to be enabled.

Facebook Groups are evolving to offer users more privacy and personalization through a new nickname feature, mirroring functionalities seen on platforms like Reddit and Discord. This update allows members to create and use a custom username for their interactions within specific groups, moving away from Facebook's traditional insistence on real names. This change addresses the need for enhanced privacy in online communities where users may not know everyone personally.
The implementation enables users to post, comment, and react under their chosen nickname, masking their main profile and photo from most group members. However, group administrators and moderators will still have visibility into the user's main profile. While past interactions will be updated with the new nickname, users can only change their nickname once every two days, and this change is group-specific.
This new functionality provides a more nuanced approach to participation, allowing for a recognizable presence without full personal disclosure. Certain features such as Live Video and private messaging are restricted when using a nickname. The feature is progressively rolling out globally, with group administrators holding the discretion to enable it within their respective communities.
