2 Jul
Summary
- AI model Fable 5 is accessible again after a security risk ban.
- Commerce Secretary Lutnick confirmed the ban lift after close collaboration.
- Concerns over national security prompted the initial export controls.

Access to Anthropic's potent Fable 5 AI model has been restored, following a two-week ban by the Commerce Department over significant cybersecurity risks. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced the lifting of restrictions, emphasizing close collaboration with Anthropic to ensure the model's approval and strengthen U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.
The ban, enacted on June 12, stemmed from concerns that bad actors could potentially bypass Fable 5's guardrails, which were designed to prevent misuse in cybersecurity and biology. Despite expert disagreement on the severity, Secretary Lutnick cited national security risks, leading to export controls that forced Anthropic to disable the model.
Following the shutdown, Anthropic's scientists worked with government officials to resolve the issues. Earlier, on Friday, Lutnick allowed Mythos 5, another powerful AI system from Anthropic, back online for about 100 trusted organizations. The temporary ban on Fable 5 had raised concerns among industry leaders about America's competitive edge against China in AI development.
