ExpressVPN Android Gets Major Security Upgrade
29 Oct
Summary
- New passwordless options include email codes, login tokens, and passkeys.
- Old activation codes are being retired in favor of newer, more secure methods.
- These updates aim to enhance user security and login convenience.

ExpressVPN has rolled out version 12.85.0 for its Android app, enhancing user login with three new passwordless options. Users can now sign in using a code sent to their email, a temporary login token generated from the ExpressVPN web portal, or a passkey. These features are already functional on the iOS version of the app.
This update marks the discontinuation of ExpressVPN's traditional activation codes. Login tokens are designed to expire shortly after generation, unlike the previous static codes, and are generated only by signed-in users. Passkeys, adhering to the FIDO2/WebAuthn standard, offer enhanced security and cross-device compatibility when synced via a passkey manager or stored on hardware security keys.
ExpressVPN is also promoting its ExpressKeys password manager for cross-platform passkey storage. While email and password login remains available, the company prioritizes the transition to these more secure and convenient authentication methods. The gradual rollout is expected to conclude for all Android users by the close of 2026.
